Welcome to season 14!!!
First off, here is Samantha Highfill of Ew interview of Jared and Jensen where everyone is super cute.
As we all know, at the end of season 13, Dean let Michael jump aboard, and together they took out Lucifer. Of course, after mission accomplished, Micheal took control and peaced-out, leaving Sam, Jack, Castiel, and a bunker full of AU world hunters behind.
(I can’t help but think that all those hunters are just Red Shirts waiting to happen.)
So we begin season 14 with a bearded Sam running the show. He is being the leader Dean told him he could be, and Michael is off trying to assemble an army to remake this world, starting with vampires.
Jack is struggling, after having his powers stripped by Lucifer, and the biggest surprize of them all, is that Nick, Lucifer’s long suffering vessel, is alive and recuperating in the bunker! WTH??
It’s a good start to the season, so let’s see where everyone is:
Sam!
The youngest Winchester has got a lot he’s dealing with. Along with grieving the loss of his brother – not even sure if he’ll ever get Dean back – he’s trying to keep Jack’s spirits up, wrangle a bunch of willing, if not entirely capable hunters, and doing his best to figure out what Nick is, or will be.
In other words, Sam is being Sam, which is comforting and shows the massive growth he’s embodied. Back in the day, when Sammy lost Dean – one way or another – he turned into a robotic, uncaring killing machine. But now he is leading the charge, and doing his best to keep everything together. And when he takes down the latest demon vying for the throne of Hell, he gives a speech that makes my lady bits tingle a little. So, Sammy is good, considering.
And, he has a stunning grief beard, which I am a big fan of. 🙂
Castiel!
MAJOR NITPICK ALERT
In the first episode, Cass is off following every lead he can and ends up at a rib joint with a dummy who wants to be the next King of Hell. And it turns out that this joint is full of demons, which seems to catch Cass off guard, which doesn’t make any sense, because Cass can see demons true faces. There was a whole episode about it! (Season 7s The Born-Again Identity)
Anyhoo, they tried to play it off with a line later in the episode, but that kind of thing irks me, especially when they generally do a good job keeping the mythology intact on this show.
In the second episode, they leave Cass to babysit Jack and Nick in the bunker, while the gang goes off in search of a Michael lead in Duluth. He is sweet, and understanding, and I love that Cass, but Castiel is also a bad-ass, show! Please don’t forget that!
Jack!
Jack spent a good chunk of last season being mopey, until he got a handle on his powers, and fought the good fight in the AU. But now that he has no powers, he’s gone back to mopey mode, and even with the help of Bobby, he’s not that good of a fighter. His continuing quest to find family is also heartbreaking. The scene with Kelly Kline’s parents was super sad. There is still lots of potential for Jack to turn bad, if he keeps feeling like an outsider, no matter how many times Cass and Sam tell him he isn’t.
But! He is the only one who says out loud what everyone should be thinking: Letting Dean die may be necessary, if that’s the only way to kill Michael. He’s not totally wrong, guys!
Nick!
Here’s a question: Crowley kept Nick’s vessel viable with spellwork way back in the day, so when he got his hands on Lucifer, there was a place to keep him. So, I buy that Nick survived the smiting of Lucifer, but does that mean that Nick is in a body that is hard to destroy? And as we saw during the second episode of this season, has Nick been compromised in a way that makes him irredeemable, after carrying around Lucifer for so long?
I’m sure we will find that out. I mean, killing that guy was quite Lucifer-like.
Mary & Bobby!
MARY AND BOBBY!!! Boy oh boy, that sure did look like a sexy times grin between these two near the end of episode one, didn’t it?
Michael/Dean!
After searching for people with pure intentions, and making a stop visiting Jo, Michael settles on vampires for his army. Once he perfects his evil elixir (vampire blood + angel grace), he moves on to werewolves, making these monsters almost invincible. Dean makes a quick appearance, fighting his way to the surface, telling Michael to get out, which is something that is supposed to work – angels can’t stay in a vessel without permission, but maybe since Michael is an arch angel, he doesn’t’ have to leave? Again, this needs explanation, because it goes against the established rules of the show.
Is this gonna be a season of rule-breaking? If so, there better be some good explanations!
We end episode two with Sam, Mary and Bobby in the very place Michael wanted them, and after thwarting a super-powered werewolf attack, Dean shows up and says that Michael just left his body.
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE THAT’S DEAN?? He didn’t even try and hug Sam!! There is no way that’s really Dean, right? Hmmmmm.
Everyone Else!
As per the season 13 finale, Rowena and Charlie are on a road trip, and from the season 14 premier Ketch is in England looking for the egg thingy that sucked Lucifer out of the president. Boy oh boy, is Ketch gonna be jealous if Mary and Bobby start something. (Listen, I need a little romance on this show, and if Sam and Dean aren’t getting any, I hope someone is!) Jo is still up to her old tricks, but also may be a new ally for the Winchesters. We shall see.
Excellent start to season 14. This season is only going be 20 episodes, instead of the 22 or 23 we are used to, which is fine with me. If the boys want a little more time with their families, then so be it. We are extremely lucky to still have this show, and the MFing Winchesters with us. And this season we hit 300 episodes, so that will be fun.
Next!
According to this promo, Dean is Dean, but I never trust the promo monkeys. Also, Jody!!
