Supernatural: Oh, God, Part One

"World's Greatest Dad"

“World’s Greatest Dad”

I have been saying all season that I didn’t want this show to go there. I wanted God to remain mysterious, the one character that we never actually meet. And then I heard that Rob Benedict was coming back and I knew deep down inside what was coming.

And then we got episode 18, “Hell’s Angel”, where the whole gang got together to take on Amara (including a now NotDead Rowena and a little Mark Pellegrino scuffle inside Castiel’s mind), and not only did they fail, but Casifer got himself accosted by Amara. Which means that the boys need more than just Lucifer to stop God’s sister.

Add all of that to the comment made by Jared that episode 20 was possibly his favorite SPN episode ever, and the appearance of God was inevitable. So I prepared myself for the episode that might ruin the show for me.

You know what? I take it all back. I should have known the second I saw Robbie Thompson’s name in the credits that it would all be okay. It was more than okay. Okay?

And after all of that, and the glorious way this whole bit was handled, I find out that this was Robbie’s last episode of the show. After five years of delighting us, he is moving on. But! He gave us a most excellent hour of television, continuing the revitalization of a show that could easily become a parody of itself after season seven.

THANK GOD FOR ROBBIE THOMPSON. And thank you Jeremy Carver, for seeing who should shepherd the God this show deserved, into the narrative.

SPN beer ironing gif

Sam and Dean: Seems as though Dean does the ironing, but he does it with beer. Hee.

Our beautiful boys catch a case in Hope Springs, ID, and pretty quickly realize that Amara is in town, spreading her fog and killing off the citizens faster and faster as she blankets the earth with her fury. Everyone except her favorite, Dean Winchester (can you blame her?).

Once again, as the town goes bonkers, and the fog makes it’s way into the sheriff’s office that the Winchesters have barricaded themselves into, Dean watches as Sammy succumbs to the sickness. While Dean is immune, and the chaos begins to close in around him, he cries out to God, “Stop this. You hear me, you dick!”, and sees something glowing in Sammy’s jacket pocket.

SPN Amulet

Metatron and God (to be referred to as Chuck from now on):

Metatron has made a friend, and while rummaging through a dumpster, he tosses the only edible food he finds to his new puppy pal. Obviously irritated with his situation, Metatron cries out, “I give up.” and instantly finds himself in a dark bar. A bar that we quickly find is occupied by God, who has decided to remain in his Chuck meat suit, as he tells Metatron that he has been keeping busy with cat blogs and Snapchat, and wants some help editing his new autobiography.

SPN Chuck edit gifThe meeting of these old working partners covers a lot of territory as they catch up, and a clearly frustrated Metatron pushes at Chuck, the proxy for the audience, wanting to know where the hell he’s been all this time.

It is awesome. As are the new chapters as Metatron gets Chuck to dig deeper into his “Keith Richards” style autobiography. Sample chapters include: Chapter 10: Why I Never Answer Prayers, And You Should Be Glad I Don’t; Chapter 11: The Truth About Divine Intervention, And Why I Avoid It At All Costs

We get to see the affection Chuck has for the WInchesters, and Castiel, and his perspective on Lucifer, and his sister, Amara. We see a divine being who invented souls and nature, be fed up with humanity, and hear him complain about the quixotic nature of his creations.

But Metatron is not convinced. Metatron claims he had been behaving badly to get Chuck’s attention, and makes a good case for the affection, maybe even addiction, humanity has for Chuck’s great lightness. He gives a pretty argument as to why humanity is not only Chuck’s greatest creation, but a creation that is worth saving, because humanity is “Better than you.”

I gotta tell ya’, Metatron almost convinced me that my “People suck.” go-to is maybe a bit harsh, and that is saying something.

It seems as though Chuck is a bit more of a softie than I, and as Chuck sings a song, and Metatron reads new pages, we see that Dean’s coarse prayer, along with Metatron’s arguments, have convinced Chuck to not only save everyone affected by Amara’s fog, but to place the glowing Samulet back into Dean’s hands, leading those beautiful Winchesters to their first sighting of Chuck since season five. We end the episode with a gobsmacked Sam and Dean standing in the street, facing their old friend, as Chuck says, “We should probably talk.”

SPN Chuck talk

So give me a moment here with the Samulet. It’s a tiny bit mean for the audience that Metatron cuts off Chuck as he is about to reveal where that sucker has been all along. It is interesting to know that while Castiel was correct that it would burn hot in the presence of God, I bet he didn’t know that God could just turn the thing off. Which leads me to wonder, if maybe that amulet is possibly a Hand of God, and if that is true, can God just turn those things on and off as he chooses? Because Sam and Dean certainly have a sweet little mini-arsenal of (maybe not) spent Hand of God weapons at this point, which could be very handy here at the end of the season.

I’m just sayin’.

Quotes!

Metatron: “That makes you seem like a grounded, likable person.” Chuck: “Yeah, what’s wrong with that?” Metatron: “You are neither grounded, nor a person.” Chuck: “So you’re saying I’m likable?”

Chuck: “I am being. She is nothingness.”

Chuck: “This is was close as I got to something as good as, or better than me or my sister.” Metatron: “The National Parks system?”

Chuck: “The world would still be spinning with DemonDean in it, but Sam couldn’t have that.”

Sam: “You’re gonna choose Amara. Over me. Over everyone.”

Next!

I liked this episode even more the second time around. I think I was so stunned at the first go round that I missed some stuff. Anyway, very well done to all involved, and it looks like we get to that talk in the next episode.
