Then!
Lady Men of Letters! c. 1943 kills Thule Nazi bastard, but only temporarily, it seems. As a MoL, she should know better!
Now!
Someone needs to go on a bunker supply run. Last week Dean subjected himself to crappy, old, Chinese take-out, and this week they are out of coffee and have a fridge full of bad milk. At least they still have beer.
Sam “discovers” that the Nazi’s had an archaeology faction, which seems off, because both Sam and Dean have seen Raiders of the Lost Ark – Dean even references it in this episode – so they would know that the Nazi’s were interested in archaeology and such, but whatever show, that is really neither here nor there, because the whole time travel bit of the show is really just filler so Sam and Casifer can have some time together in the bunker.
Misha Collins does such a good job as Lucifer as Cas, and it is harrowing watching Sam just convene with the angel who he thinks is his friend, but who is maybe Sam’s number one villain after clowns. And Casifer is actually impressed with the boys’ ingenuity in trying to find a solution for their Amara problem.
But when Sam finds a spell that could help retrieve Dean from the past, and Sam gives up on said spell due to their lack of an Archangel, we see that even though Lucifer is quite terrifying and all, he still wants the same thing as Sam and Dean. He seems to truly want to defeat Amara, so there’s that.
Casifer goes ahead with the spell, seeing he knows that he is an actual Archangel, and not a broken Castiel, and when Sam offers his soul to help boost his power, Lucifer just can’t take it anymore. He finally breaks his ruse, and the look on poor Sam’s face when he realizes that he has been talking to Lucifer this whole time, and that his friend Castiel has let the Devil in, is very sad.
And then Lucifer touches Sammy’s soul, just ’cause he can. OUCH.
And then! Castiel claws his way out just long enough to hold back Lucifer and confirm to Sam that he did indeed invite Lucifer into his vessel, because he wanted to help.
But since Lucifer wants the Hand of God weapon too, he goes back and snatches Dean from the submarine in 1943, and pops back into the bunker, where Sam immediately tells Dean that Cas is definitely not Cas.
Lucifer grabs the Hand of God from Dean, and Ooopsie! Looks as though this particular God weapon was a one-off. As Lucifer blathers on about how much he dislikes working with the Winchesters and trying to pretend to be Castiel, Sam draws a familiar sigil on the stone of the bunker, and sends Lucifer off into the ether, sans the Hand of God.
Sam and Dean have a chat by the water*, Dean lamenting that he was just a witness to the events on the sub, implying that he will only be a witness to the taking down of Amara, and insisting that Castiel was tricked by Lucifer into letting him drive his vessel. Dean is not taking any of this well.
*How far did they have to drive to get to this water? Is water like this near them in Kansas? I am not a geography genius, so maybe there is water like this nearby.
Dean still has the spent Hand of God, and if I know this show at all, there is a good chance that this weapon isn’t really, sincerely dead. Let’s hope Dean puts it in a safe place, right?
Quotes!
Casifer: “Time travel, it runs on a different system.” Dean: “I knew it.”
Casifer: “Maybe it’s because you’re like the girl who kept turning me down for the prom.”
Sam: “Dean, that’s not Cas!” Lucifer: “Cat’s out.”
Lucifer: “I feel a burden lifted. You know this whole, deep cover thing, it wasn’t terribly well thought out. Donning this Cas mask, this grim face of angelic constipation? Just, ugh. And then, teaming up with you two? I mean, I thought you boys were insufferable as mortal enemies, but working with you, that’s the soul crusher.”
Dean: “Well, who would’ve thought the Hand of God would turn out to be a one-hitter.”
OH HEY! —–> Maybe I am forgetting something here, but didn’t Balthazar have a cache of God weapons stashed somewhere way back in season six? Did we ever find out what happened to those? I can’t remember, but I bet they would come in handy with Amara.
I don’t know how much longer we will get to have Misha playing Lucifer in Castiel’s vessel, but it has been fun so far. Next week looks like we’ll get some more of Crowley and Lucifer, which should be fun as well.
Next! Wrestlers. Hm.
