Before I say anything, jut look at this picture. Not only are those boys as beautiful as ever, and looking sweet sitting in the Impala, but Sammy’s hair looks awesome. Much better than season 10 Sammy hair. Good job, guys. 🙂
I have started this post a myriad of times over the past few months. First it was a season recap; then a recap and thoughts on season 11; then just some links and pics; and now it is two days until the season 11 premiere, and I still haven’t finished it. And it’s not because I disliked season 10, I liked 10 pretty well, with some very strong episodes and a fantastically Supernatural style finish.
There is no good excuse, not really, except that it was a roller-coaster of a summer, and I just couldn’t seem to gather my thoughts.
So.
No matter what you thought of season 10 as a whole, Jeremy Carver and associates still know how to bring a season finale, eh? Not only resolving the Mark of Cain storyline in an unexpected way, but introducing the BigBad for season 11 in an OMGILOVESUPERNATURAL kinda way.
Season 10 had its ups and downs, but it was anchored by the almost perfect 200th episode. If you didn’t shed a wee little tear when Dean put the amulet on the rear view mirror before the boys drove off into the sunset, you are most likely dead inside. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Did the stuff between Crowley and his Mum (The awesome Ruth Connell) get a little tedious? Yes. Did Sam fretting about Dean and The Mark get a bit irritating? Sure. Especially all the lying and secret keeping. I like my boys united and rooting for each other, you know. Was the Castiel and his annoying teen “daughter” storyline, annoying? Yup. Although they did wrap it up nicely, and made Claire a wee bit less irritating there at the end.
Still, I’m not complaining. A show this old, that has covered so much, can be forgiven, in my mind, because it still embodies what I show up for: emotion, fight, and family. There is a reason that Jared’s campaign, #AlwaysKeepFighting has resonated with the fans, and why the #SPNfamily has gotten so tight. This is still a world where the characters feel deeply, and do whatever they have to, to get the job done. When someone dies, it isn’t taken lightly. It resonates through everyone, and we have the privilege to be let into the agony and fear of living, and the joy and relief of achieving a goal.
So, now we have The Darkness to contend with. Someone online pointed out the seeming similarity of this BigBad to Buffy’s The First. Very well noted! Being of the same genre, Buffy and SPN have touched on many of the same themes, albeit handled in their own unique ways. It’s funny, because one of the reasons I refused to watch Supernatural when it first began was it’s similarity to Buffy (and The X-Files). I loved that show, and I was not swayed by the fact that the leads of this new show were stunningly beautiful men. But someone smarter than me – my roommate at the time – harassed me to watch until I finally gave in, and a Supernatural fan was born. Sometimes you have to get out of your own way, you know? 🙂
We’re still a month just two days away from the season 11 premiere, and the boys have been giving  us some sneak peeks into what we can expect. The idea that The Darkness may manifest as a female entity, which is nice, and the very exciting news that there is an episode title “Baby”, which is apparently a whole episode that takes place in the Impala. AWESOME. How can you not look forward to something like that? Here’s a little Q&A with Jared and Jensen regarding the upcoming season. My favorite part? That those beautiful boys will be a team, working together against a common goal, just the way I like it.
Jensen speaks about season 11:
