I can’t help but get choked up when Sam or Dean rescues the other, in a caring and brotherly manner. No matter what has occurred, the lying, the crazy, they still show up for each other when it is necessary. Love those beautiful boys.
Suzie
In 1980, Suzie unleashes a suicidal horror show from the Werther box, hidden by the Men of letters in her basement, because she is releasing some latent feminist issues via sledgehammer. 35 years later, Sam comes for the box since it contains a codex needed for Rowena to translate the Book of the Damned for him.
Dean shows up to assist Sammy, and while Suzie is busy trying to figure out why two men have suddenly showed up at her home after years of seclusion, Sam blows it downstairs and releases the evil green cloud of doom, sending poor Suzie through the taunting ghosts of her family. Much like many innocents before her, the Winchesters mere presence means the end of Suzie, and she kills herself with her pistol. Poor Suzie.
Dean
Dean texts Sammy that he’s headed to a vamp nest in Tulsa while Sam is making a terrible, terrible deal with Rowena. By the time Sam gets there, Dean has taken out the whole nest. Happily. As is usual these days, Sammy lies to and then sneaks out from Dean, only to have Dean track him down and help.
Once they get into the St. Louis Suicide House, and Sammy unleashes the evil green cloud of doom, Dean finds himself suddenly in purgatory. Where he runs into Benny. But Dean knows this isn’t really purgatory, and that really isn’t Benny. But “Benny” puts up a pretty good reason for Dean to take himself out, and if it wasn’t for the Mark of Cain, I think Dean would at least have considered suicide. Benny, as Dean’s conscious, shows us his struggle, and even in his darkness, he is still trying to protect the people he loves. It’s actually very sweet. And also very sad that Dean loved being in Purgatory. So, Dean has to kill Benny again, and the spell is broken. Dean runs down to the basement to find Sam.
Sam
Sammy starts out making a deal with Rowena that is bound to end badly. Then he gets mad at Dean for not waiting for him on a vampire hunt. Then, back at the bunker, while Dean sleeps to the sound of Speed 2: Cruise Control, Sammy does some researchin’, and heads out looking for the codex Rowena needs to translate the Book of the Damned. Dean is close behind, though, and while Dean is upstairs trying to sweet talk Suzie, Sam lets loose the evil green cloud of doom.
After Sam sees Suzie kill herself, he is greeted by Rowena, who helps him tie up a green cloud possessed Dean, and they head back down to the basement to try and open the Werther box once again. Rowena proves to be quite helpful, and once they figure out that the box needs legacy blood to open it, Sammy quickly opens a vein and lets the blood flow.
But that darn box needs a whole Men of Letters worth of blood to open. Sam takes a break, and on Rowena’s encouragement, opens another vein, filling up that box with legacy blood. Dean comes running just in the nick of time, and has to convince a weak but more-determined-than-ever Sammy to let Dean contribute to the blood bowl. Once again, Sam and Dean show us just how far they will go to save each other. It is sweet, and a little twisted and beautifully co-dependent, just the way we like it! It is now that we realize that Rowena was Sam’s hallucination. Tricky! (It’s funny that Sam’s suicide hallucination is mission focused. Nerd to the end, that Sammy.)
WE all know that the boys are stronger together, but it’s nice hear Dean say it. Now all we have to do is get Sammy to tell Dean what he’s up too. Even though I am pretty sure that Dean suspects that Sam hasn’t stopped trying to save him. I mean, that’s what Dean would do, right? I hope that when this all comes out it doesn’t make things worse. Together Is Better, Sammy!
“We had an agreement, giant!” Sam hands over the codex to Rowena, after chaining her to a table in some abandoned building, so she can translate. She is not happy. Rowena locked up and left all alone. What could possibly go wrong?
Next! The return of Castiel’s “daughter.” great.
