When “12 Monkeys” came out in 1995, Brad Pitt was a rising superstar and Bruce Willis was no longer a superstar, but was on the comeback trail.
And Terry Gilliam fans flocked to the movies to see his latest mind-twisting tale – one of time travel, conspiracy, and the post-apocalyptic future.
I’ll admit that when SyFy announced it was making a series out of one of my favorite movies (along with another bizarre science fiction flick of the 1990s that also starred Willis, “The Fifth Element,” it’s one of those I can rewatch from any moment, whether 5 minutes in or 5 minutes from the end), I was extremely skeptical.
Then I watched the first trailer, and I was intrigued. Enough of a remake to capture the elements that make it faithful to the source material and enough of a re-imagining to make it work as a series and make it its own. Perhaps akin to Battlestar Galactica’s re-imagining, where the new version surpassed the past.
I know I’ll be watching Friday, and the #unmakehistory hashtag will hold meaning beyond the show for me.
Will you?
