I have got to say, the SPN writer’s are really giving it all they got this season. An outstanding episode which brings us the SPN version of Cain and Abel, via the lovely and charming Timothy Omundson (Jericho, Psyche) as the retired Cain. Excellent! And as much as I enjoyed this episode, I am having a hard time writing about it, so I’m just gonna plow right through it, okay? Okay.
Crowley finds Dean at the bar Gadreel was working at and convinces Dean to team up to get the First Blade to help him kill Abadon. Dean is all FINE, because he has dead-ended his search, and is a glutton for punishment I suppose. After some sketchy clues in Daddy Winchester’s journal, and a trip to one of his storage rooms, they find the uber-ripped Tara who not only hunted with Daddy Winchester, and knows something about this knife, but spent a lovely evening with him, ifyouknowwhatImean. (I mean really, who wouldn’t?) After a quick spell ingredient assist from Crowley, the new buddies climb into Metallicar and head off to Missouri in search of the current owner of the knife.
Meanwhile, Sam and Castiel find their footing as new roomies in the MoL bunker. Castiel laments the memory of his beloved PB&J (they taste disgusting since he got his grace back), and Sammy mopes wishing he was dead or something mope-like. During a healing session, Castiel figures out that Gadreel has left some of his grace behind in Sammy, and the two get to reasearchin’ to see if they can use it to cast a tracking spell on the errant angel. Confident that the spell will work, Sammy makes Cas stab the grace extracting needle deep into his neck and begin the removal, but Cas stops once he realizes that further extraction will kill Sammy good and dead. Castiel shows us why he is the sweetest little angel by admitting to his failures, and hoping that Sam can see how precious not only his life is, but to give Dean a break. It is very nice and heart warming, and while Cas doesn’t have the same natural chemistry with Sam as he does with Dean, we see that Cas cares very much for the tallest Winchester. Those two had exactly the kind of scene I was hoping for. So, YAY for me.
Back in Missouri, Dean and Crowley find Cain of the famous Cain & Abel living out his life, retired from mayhem and keeping bees. He is wily about the whole First Blade issue, as you would expect, and Crowley is an uncharacteristically Nervous Nelly just being in the presence of Cain, the Inventor of Murder. Not easily rebuffed, Dean convinces Crowley to sneak back into Cain’s house for the knife, and are busted not only by Cain, but a phalanx of Abadon friendly demons who are thrilled to find Dean, Crowley and Cain all in one place.
Cue badass Dean and demon fight, while Cain looks on from the dinner table. Crowley gets one demon to fight, but Dean dispatches several, earning Cain’s approval. Cain likes Dean so much that he gives him the mark of Cain so Dean can use the First Blade, once Crowley finds it in the very clever hiding spot: the bottom of the ocean. One condition Dean – you have to come back and kill Cain when he calls. Dean, never one to shirk a bargain, agrees and takes on the burden of the mark, which I am sure will be a terrible/very good idea by the end of the season. I mean, really, how can carrying around the mark of Cain cause any issues over the long-term? :/
So our fair writers have given us another biblical bible tale, skewed it in their SPN way, and given us some more thoughts to think regarding the wonderful Winchester brothers. I mean, a couple of brothers that have been through as much as they have been through are either gonna be Shakespearean or Biblical in their epic-ness, right?
Looks like there is a quick answer to the reunion of Sam and Dean in our next episode, which reads as a stand-alone by the previews, and makes me sad, because I want a scene of Crowley searching the ocean floor.
Also, since I was last here, I have discovered the existence of the SuperSleepy fandom, and I approve.
