I used to be a spoiler kind of gal.
I loved to find out what was going to happen on my favorite shows and being surprised sooner rather than later.
But in the last couple of years, I’ve been avoiding spoilers like the plague. It all started toward the end of 24‘s Day 6, when I read on Ausiello and BuddyTV that Tony Almeida was coming back from the dead for the finale.
To this day, I’m not sure if my disappointment at the finale was colored by a lack of Tony (hey – I COINED the term “crapapalooza” to describe Day 6, so don’t go telling me all about how bad it was; I know. But think about the finale – Bill (rip) got his own sack and piloted a helicopter, Jack leaped from the ‘copter after blowing up an oil rig so that he could go swim and see Audrey; the scene with SecDef Heller was RIVETING and it was so sad to see Jack stand at the edge of the cliff).
I just was sitting there, waiting to see our long-thought-dead Tony show up and Jack be stunned and then … fade to black.
Didn’t happen.
Supposedly, the powers that be decided to hold off on Tony until Season 7, blah blah blah, but whatever. Whether the spoilers were right at some point or never right doesn’t really matter – they were wrong.
But with the end of Battlestar Galactica barely more than a week away, spoilers are all the heck over the place. So I don’t read any BSG posts or news stories except those submitted for my weekly So Say We All blog carnival.
That’s how I found this post by carnival regular Kenneth Hynek. He submitted it early for next week’s carnival. I really enjoy Kenneth’s thoughtful posts each week on Battlestar, so before I knew it, I was caught up in reading it.
He warned about the spoilers, so I don’t blame him. And he gives his thoughts on each, as to whether they’re realistic, how he feels about them, etc.
But halfway through, I stopped reading because I was just too engrossed.
I’ve seldom felt about any show the way I feel about BSG. It’s probably the smartest show ever on television. Even the worst-drawn characters are fascinating. I’m hard-wired to love the mythology, as I am a sci-fi junkie and was in love with Richard Hatch throughout my childhood because of the original series. (I never had a problem with them making Starbuck a woman, by the by.)
Everything I read made sense given what this show has given us. Hell, it’s probably all true. But I don’t want to know until I can see it.
I want to sit down tomorrow night and see what happens. And then next week, whenever they post the two-hour finale online, I want to see it for the first time, seeing as it’s going to be the last first time I ever have with my beloved show.
I’ve been saving some BSG and Caprica articles I never got around to blogging about, so here’s a quick roundup:
• The United Nations on Tuesday is hosting a discussion of the show and how it’s handled the issues of war, faith and morality. For real. Moore & Eick will be there, as will Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos, plus three U.N. representatives and Whoopi Goldberg, a fan who’s moderating. It’s an invitation-only event, but it will be recorded and a transcript made.
• Jane Espenson talked to io9 about being named showrunner on Caprica.
• Tricia Helfer, the extremely talented actress (yes, and hot) who plays Number Six, gave an interview about the end of the show to Crave Online.
